Good morning, Rallypoint. Today's Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) is titled "Moon Mountains Magnified during Ring of Fire Eclipse." This composite image of yesterday's annular eclipse was taken from Xiamen, China. As you've probably heard already, an annular eclipse produces the ring of fire. Images at each end of the sequence (left to right) show sunlight that streamed through lunar valleys as the Moon continued to move. Only higher peaks on the Moon's perimeter could block sunlight, thus producing the projected, distorted, reversed, and magnified shadows of mountains at the Moon's edge. Bright areas in the image would have appeared as single points in each frame (these are are called Bailey's Beads). Looks like it was a good show. On June 10, 2021, our brothers and sisters in Canada and Greenland will get a chance at the same treat.
