I remember while stationed at Eglin, the guys that went out to recover the target drones were an all enlisted crew. The SrA who was the skipper was refereed to as Captain while manning his post.

I've only seen cop boats while I was TDY to MacDill AFB in 2004. Great article MSgt Danny Hope

In 1971 Tyndall had PT boats doing this mission. My Dad, a young diesel rated Staff Sergeant nearing Reenlistment was sent to run one for6 months. Go “try it out.” Best job he’d had. This is what he was offered to stay plus $4K. The day he goes to sign, problem. “I can give you this duty if you become a lineman for a tour first.” He walked out and started clearing.

In '79 my Division career counselor hounded me to re-up. How much SRB I kept asking. Well, we'll give you gas turbine school. Ok again, how much SRB? Well we'll get you Caterpillar school. Losi, I asked, HOW MUCH IS THE STANDARD REENLISTMENT BONUS for Enginman, for a six year hitch? $1800.00. Cya. Machinist Mates were getting $18000.00 at the time. They basically did the same job as enginemen, but without advanced diesel training. Go figure. The Navy way.
