I started out on the ship as a Fireman Apprentice E2, went to messcooking, promoted to E3, then promoted to EN3 (E4) in 1977. I took the test for E5, but processed out before I knew my test results. Looking back on that time, I so wish I'd takes my enlistment seriously, and went for NAVY SEALS. Then, I just didn't have the right attitude, but did have the young body for it. Nowadays I've got the attitude, but not the body for it. WC Fields said, (I think) that "youth is wasted on the young." So true.
