APOD: 2020 April 27 - Fresh Tiger Stripes on Saturns Enceladus

Good afternoon, Rallypoint. Today's Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) is titled "Fresh Tiger Stripes on Saturns Enceladus." The 'tiger stripes' are four sub-parallel, linear depressions (emphasized in blue for this image) in the south polar region of the Saturnian moon Enceladus. Observations from Cassini beginning in 2005 showed the tiger stripes to have elevated surface temperatures, indicative of present-day cryovolcanism (volcanoes that erupt water, ammonia, or methane). Further evidence from Cassini indicated that outgassing from these cryovolcanic vents were contributing to Saturn's E-ring. A recent analysis of ejected ice grains has yielded evidence that complex organic molecules exist inside Enceladus. These large carbon-rich molecules bolster -- but do not prove -- that oceans under Enceladus' surface could contain life.
