If memory serves me properly, at the onset of the Battle of Midway our bombing was quite ineffective. I think it was a combination of high altitude and dive bombing. Japanese ships sailed erratically to make them harder to hit. The Japanese fleet was in a quandary as it pushed out bombers to find our fleet. The Japanese admiral in charge would lose his bombers if he sent out fighters to protect his fleet, thus losing all his bombers due to low fuel. He decided to wait for his bombers to return which I believe was problematic to security of his fleet. After waves upon waves of ineffective American bombers, the American carriers sent in the A team that caused much devastation to the Japanese fleet. The Japanese navy was never the same again, and the subsequent Battle of the Philippine Sea would seal the fate of the Japanese navy. They became incapable of supporting land forces and sending planes to fight the American fleet.
