I did considerable research on Mary Ann Ganser and learned that her birth year, death year and manner of death are unconfirmed. It seems more likely that she died of encephalitis in 1971 since her sister Marge died of cancer later that century.

Background from multiple sources on Mary Ann Ganser.
American singer Mary Ann Ganser was born on Feb 4, 1948 [else 1947] at Oceanside, Nassau County, New York, and died on March 16, 1970 at Forest Hills, Queens County, New York. In 1963, along with her twin sister Marge Ganser, Betty Weiss and Mary Weiss, they were performing at talent shows when they recorded their first song "Simon Says" on the Smash label. Between 1963 to 1968, their many hits included "Wishing Well", "Hate To Say I Told You So", "I Can Never Go Home Anymore" and "Leader of the Pack". In 2004, their 1964 recording of "Remember, Walking In the Sand" placed number 395 on Rolling Stone Magazine's list of 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.
With twin Marge, she formed one half of the briefly successful Shangri-Las (1964) and began singing with Marge and sisters Liz and Mary Weiss while at Jackson High School in Queens; The Shangri-Las released 1st hit, "Remember (Walkin' in the Sand)," which launched the Red Bird label (1964), and also released the album Leader of the Pack (1964), which included #1 hit title track; had such hit songs as "Give Him a Great Big Kiss" (1964), "Give Us Your Blessings" (1965) and "Long Live Our Love" (1966).
After record label problems and a downturn in their popularity, the Shangri-Las called it quits in 1968. Bitter from not receiving royalties from their millions of records sold, Mary Ann Ganser retired from the music industry, and on March 16, 1970.

Mary Ann and Margie were more assertive, actually, as far as their public persona. Both of them were much gruffer than me. They both had great senses of humor. They were pranksters.
They were very similar personality-wise. Margie was more aggressive than Mary Ann. When my sister wasn’t in the group and it was just me and the twins, it was like “Hello? What do you mean ‘majority rules’?!” It was very devastating for Margie when Mary Ann died.
Yes, Dusty [Springield] is an absolutely amazing talent. The Shangri-Las were in London doing Top of the Pops and Ready! Steady! Go! Dusty was having a very large party in her flat. It started out all civilized, nice French doors and antique desks, but she liked to start food fights. And she started one and I’m hiding under this lovely French desk with her manager and fish and food are flying by! They were actually throwing pies later in the night. So Mary Annd goes to put her boots on and they were filled with fish! Dusty was a kinky girl, but a true talent. But, Mary Ann got even with Dusty. She waited and waited and the next time we were with Dusty at the Brooklyn Fox, Mary Ann put fish in Dusty’s shoes. And that’s called….payback! (laughs)"
