Nicely done, SGT (Join to see)! Very detailed and comprehensive! In 2003, Sports Illustrated weighed in, declaring the Iron Bowl to be the greatest college football rivalry!
As a point of clarification, Alabama was perfectly content to keep the game at Legion Field in Birmingham, Alabama indefinitely. Although viewed as a neutral venue, everyone in the state knew that Birmingham was a pro Bama town and Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa was woefully inadequate.
It was Auburn that decided to take their “home“ game back home first. Auburn’s stadium already held 80,000, which was almost 10,000 more than Legion Field. Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa, at the time, held only 55-60,000. Alabama then went into overdrive to make their on campus venue larger and more acceptable.
The story goes that when relatively new Auburn head coach (and Bryant disciple) Pat Dye told Alabama’s Paul Bryant he was taking the Auburn home game to campus, Bryant exclaimed, “Over my dead body!” Dye simply and calmly replied, “Coach, you ain’t gonna live forever.”
