Prior to 9/11, native Canadians could have gone to the US without a passport just showing their birth certificates when driving through a border checkpoint. Also, Quebec has special status such as they actually have their own rules such as you cannot be a resident alien in that province unless you speak fluent French . I saw the story on NPR but I will have to listen to it and read it

I remember when they moved the customs house from town to the border. Town was 5 miles from the border. Just stop and tell the agents you were in country. Nothing like the concentration camp out there now. In the late 20's and early30's , the oldtimers said there was lots of booze crossing out there. Now it's drugs and all that they have to watch and catch them, still doesn't catch them all

my dad knew a few too, but I can't remember the term used to describe them. Lots of booze came through this area. Prohibition really worked well
