Sounds a bit degraded from the older standard.

Obviously, I was never Air Force, so my comparison is to the 2-mile run, sit-ups and push-ups.

That's all ? Even when I did an Armed Federal Contract with the USAF We had to meet their physical standards and do the same PT test, had the mile and 1/2 and a certain number of push-ups and sit-ups which I had done in 1/3rd the time allocated. The mile and 1/2 despite stopping on the to tie both shows during the run finished in 9.46 and that was at age 65. I still beat all the 20 years old that were running. I also wasn't out of breath. We had the choice of running a track, doing treadmill or cross country, I did the cross country and hills don't bother me. I think its boring running circles, I'd rather run cross country. I wasn't running regular then, back when I did in My 20's it was 5 to 10 mile runs. Its just not that hard ans still isn't. My height and weight also hasn't changed in 40 years, 6'2" , 190

There are also medical conditions that may have gone undetected as well, just my two cents. As there are no causes of death in the article, one can only speculate.
