Songs can sometimes better express how feelings are than what can be said. Rational thought is subject to what we think we know, what we have been told, what we are willing to say bearing in mind criticism. Songs about war are interesting to take many things into consideration. A popular song before I enlisted was Barry Sadler's Ballad of the Green Beret. I liked it, and I was a supporter of our involvement in the Vietnam War. Enlisted in 1968, a Corpsman was highly likely to see combat. By 1970 while I was on Guam, a year before I was in the combat zone, a sample popular song was "War" by Edwin Starr (‘War, what is it good for? Absolutely nothing’)

"Best" is always subjective.
When I conducted my online survey on my forum (400 members at that time) back in '02, I collected 100 of the top listed songs. The #1 song was "We've got to get out of this place" followed closely by "Paint it Black," "Silver wings," "Fortunate Son," "Where have all the flowers gone," and "The Letter."

MSG Stan Hutchison - Have you read this book? My husband and I have and there are some really great interviews in it. Especially funny was the lyrics soldiers changed in various songs. For my husband, there were a lot of different songs he liked when he was there.

MSG Stan Hutchison - Since it was printed in 2015, I don't know if it's still in print or if you have to order a used copy. But it's a really great read. My husband's choice while he was there was hard for him to pin down to just one song. Although Hendrix's "All Along the Watchtower" was at the top of his list.
