While I understand people's desire to serve, the military is not an equal opportunity employer. We don't take blind, deaf or otherwise impaired persons even though the US has an ADA employment act. We have a different mission and anything that takes away from that mission is wrong.

It's true, we don't take the blind and we don't take those with hearing impairment. Being transgender is not considered a disability. Gender dysphoria is, but the course of treatment is to transition. The policy in the military was that those wishing to enlist must be gender stable and deployable prior to enlisting. Just like anyone else looking to serve.
For those of us already in the course of treatment is presented as far more limiting than it actually is. First of all there are many illnesses which are bars to enlistment but do not require service separation if you are already here. Further more trans people have been going through the transition process, and deploying for 3 years now with no cases of trans people being unable to recover and deploy in an untimely manner.
I know that we can cite that down time as a criteria. However, as I have argued before; 1 in 10 men in the military gets a vasectomy. The average cost is well over $1,000 and each of them is non deployable for over 30 days. When we add it up the cost of vasectomies is 4 times higher than the cost of trans care and the DOD looses thousands of days per year to non deployability. All for men to alter their genitals...which if I understand it, is something that folks get upset about with trans folks.

I remember the days when two sailors were caught in the same rack were discharged immediately. It worked pretty good.
