LBJ was caught in the middle. He did not want to be consider soft on communism, but he also did not want to be responsible for starting WWIII.

(I am not defending his actions, only trying to put them in perspective.)

My father always described it as at that point, it stopped being a civil war (VC dominated), to an invasion by the North.

PO3 Bob McCord - I'd add Mcnamara (sp?) as SecDef as being huge part of the problem.
