“On January 5, 2019, 3rd Recruit Training Battalion aboard Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island will start their training cycle with one female platoon and five male platoons,” the Marine Corps said in a statement.

I would agree housing should be remain divided however both need to learn the same thing during training and that's nothing new in most places. Once out of the Recruit depots they will all have to work together as Marines anyway and it seems this may be a good place to start, by training side by side. The bottom line is this is the place to learn and insure each recruit is equipped to handle the duties that will be expected of each and every one of them.

The battalions are integrated, the platoons are not. No, there will be no mixture of male and female recruits in the squad bay.

I also don't think that would be a good idea either but proceeding on this it appears it should work fine. Its not as big a deal as some make it sound out to be for the reasons both you and I outlined. It's not a brand new idea anyway.
