What made the Romans so successful was their ability to stand together. When that didn't happen they were no better than anyone else. The Roman square depended on cooperation.

It looks like the Romans were on the low ground attacking up hill, possibly masking the numbers and location of the Cimbri. I wonder what the terrain was like. The Romans used tight formations, but rough terrain hinders tight formations.
