In 1969 I was thinking that there was a good chance I could get a million dollars of flight training without having to go to Nam. My "timing" was off by a couple years, but the "drawdown" DID prevent me from completing a second tour. Instead, I spent the next several years "sweating out" the huge reductions-in-force (RIFs - post Vietnam) that happened. Just as my time to return to Nam was coming up in 1973, we "abandoned" RVN to their fate, and I was sent to Safety School (USC - Los Angeles) enroute to Korea instead. It was while I was in Korea ('74-75) that RVN fell to the Communists. Nixon had resigned, and Ford (and the American people) had "no stomach" for rescuing our ally.
