South Vietnam’s Communist Party newspaper Nhan Dan and Radio Hanoi announce that Ho Chi Minh is to be succeeded by a committee of leadership consisting of Le Duan, first secretary of the party; Truong Chin, member of the Politburo and chairman of the National Assembly; General Vo Nguyen Giap, defense minister, and Premier Pham Van Dong. Ho, the spiritual leader of North Vietnam and the Vietnamese communists in the South, had died on September 2. His passing led many in America to hope that the time might be right to negotiate an end to the war, but his death had little long-term impact on the war as he had long been only a ceremonial figurehead. The new committee carried on with the war until the Paris Peace Accords were signed in January 1973 and, after U.S. forces departed, directed North Vietnamese forces as the fighting renewed in the South until they were eventually victorious in April 1975.

The only thing that brought them to the table in the first place was the bombing in North Vietnam, taking the war to them. They had proved over and over again every time there was a bombing halt they couldn't be trusted, they would use that to move their forces into position to attack. That happened every time. Once South Vietnam was run out on by the United States and not even supplied as they were promised the result was predicable. North Vietnam again proved as they always had their word was useless and with South Vietnamese troops not even having ammunition for their weapons weren't even capable of defending themselves. With the the United States Government lost its credibility in the International Community after running out on South Vietnam. Other nations wondered if the US would also run out them and up until well after that time period. when President Reagan regained our standing our perceived trust on keeping our word was very much in question.
