PO1 William "Chip" Nagel You see, we plead TOOOOO MANY of these out. He KILLED an innocent man and injured two more because he is a bigoted a$$hat! He should have stood trial for the death penalty...Of course, I am a bit of a hard ass.

I'm not for the death penalty or for torture. Just way too many screw ups on both ends of those proposals. He saved the tax payers millions of dollars in death penalty appeals by taking the plea agreement and it's much harder to overturn a plea agreement than a trial verdict.

Patricia Overmeyer - Sometimes it isn't about cost savings, and sometimes it is. In this case, the cost savings of the death penalty would be immeasurable in its preventive impact. Besides, some a$$holes just deserve to die. No donut for you!

Never asked for a doughnut. There have been no definitive studies which prove the death penalty is a deterrent. There have been no definitive studies which prove the torture of persons is a deterrent. Torture falls under the retribution theory of punishment. The US and other countries have rejected the retribution theory of punishment. It's still alive and well under Sharia Law, though. The death penalty falls under the deterrence, both general and specific, theory of punishment. The rejection of the death penalty is to ensure that we don't sentence people to death who are actually innocent. We've seen enough life sentences, etc. overturned on DNA evidence which proved the convicted person was actually innocent. As far as the specific deterrence argument for the death penalty, we still have the ability to ensure people are removed from society and have no way to rejoin it. Hence life sentences without possibility of parole.
Cost savings in accepting a plea agreement is actually part of the US Criminal Sentencing Guidelines and will result in a downward adjustment to a sentence. Cost savings in accepting a plea agreement are in several state criminal sentencing codes, as well as other country's sentencing codes.
As for the fact that some assholes just deserve to die, maybe you can make that judgment call. As for me, no one appointed me to make the judgment call of whether or not someone should die just because they are an asshole.
