They did some weird stuff at times. I remember in SE Asia I was called to repair aircraft in a special compound. I was told that weren't even any aircraft assigned there.

MSgt Dale Johnson - It was no doubt just a transit aircraft, maybe . Actually one person I worked with had been a pilot of a U10 which was a single prop, high wing aircraft. He flew in Vietnam and could carry a small number of people or cargo. The would clear hillsides and He would land going up the hill so He could slow to a stop before He ran out of hill. Taking off went downhill to pick up speed. Often came in sideways to reduce air speed, straightened out and the landed. Often it was places He landed for Special Forces, "Green Beret" areas. Shown in this picture is a U10 with was a STOL aircraft, short takeoff and landing.

It is an amazing machine. I saw one (showing off) take off sideways to the runway at Can Tho AAF one time in Vietnam. It was a fantastic C/STOL demonstration. The civilian version is called a Helio Courier. The Helio Courier is a cantilever high-wing light C/STOL utility aircraft designed in 1949. It was used extensively on the Mission field by missionary aviation organizations such as JAARS (Jungle Aviation and Radio Service) in some of the toughest air operational areas in the world. It can operate in rough, remote areas almost as good as a helicopter, and far cheaper.

CW5 John M. - I did understand that was a pretty popular aircraft in remote areas exactly for the reasons You stated. I guess pilots is some places in remote places in Alaska love them also.

Usual treatment of a spy during wartime. Wonder who was pushing for the charges?

There may be justification for summary executions in wartime, depending on the specific facts of each instance. Rules of engagement and wartime laws must be adhered to. Investigations are also warranted to determine whether the execution was justifiable. Those doing the executions had better be right - or suffer the consquences of being tried for war crimes. If politics or "spin" enter into the picture, things can really get messy. IMHO.
