Russia has vast natural resources and vast territory. However, it is relatively sparsely populated (approx 144 million spread across 11 time zones) On their eastern frontier they are faced by China with 1.38 billion jammed into a relatively tiny nation with depleted resources. And on their Eastern frontier they have Europe with 738 million crammed into an area the size of Texas with a paucity of resources. On their southern doorstep they have the vast Islamic hordes of the 'Stans and the Middle East hungering for land and resources. Given these facts, I suspect that Russia might be ripe for a deal if we can stop making them the whipping boy in our own internal political games.

CPT Jack Durish - Other than the nukes......what do we share? Our societies are quite different, our form of government, our goals, our ideals, our beliefs.......what is it that we share in common? Serious question, since you seem to think we should be allies with them based on what we have in common.

CPT Jack Durish - Say, Captain Jack.......the Russians say they are ready to begin practical implementation of the military things agreed to between Trump and Putin. We have no idea what those things are. Just curious.......are you comfortable with that? Our POTUS has agreed to things he has not been willing to share with the people he represents. Does this not give you cause for concern?

SSgt Gary Andrews - On an obvious level, we share common enemies. China. Islam. Indeed, Russia is far more vulnerable than we. The enemies are at their doorstep. On a less obvious level, we share a common heritage. Western Civilization. Sadly, it is an imperfect thing in Russia after far too many years of subjugation. But the seeds of civilization are there. They simply need proper care and nurturing (which we could give if we weren't so busy using them as a whipping boy). Finally, on a really obscure level, we share romanticism. Russians and Americans, more so than any others in the world are hopeless romantics. You can find it in our literature. No other peoples share this trait as much as we.

Gas and oil make the world go economically. Those countries who have it and sell it or have it to FULLY fuel their own country can and will survive being exploited by other countries. The United States has it but still brings it in from other countries. I personally feel that this is good in that our manufactured goods can be sent world wide. We also can up our own production at any time if countries that export it to the Unites States tried to hold us hostage like the 1970 oil embargo. We are in a much better place that it will not have any effect if it happens again.
