We always had in the ranks the atheist, who I didn't pay attention too.
I can't see why, the Navy would put the words, Atheist, and Chaplain together, someone with nothing to do probably invented the word.
In the police we had the word, "Street Lawyers", People on the street who thought they knew the laws.
With that said, I'm inventing the word, "Field Chaplain", the atheist or others who think that they're a Chaplain, and don't believe in God.
I think, the ranks can have their, "Field Chaplains", and keep the title of "Chaplain" who are real believers in God and know their profession with God, that our solders depend on in the field.
No disrespect to all, the right to believe or not is your right as an individual.
It's just my opinion, I did see and attend religious services in the field, and those non believers, "They were there attending the services too, looking for comfort from the Chaplain, before they met their maker during a fire fight." Salute!

That's a tough one sir, but everyone needs a person of like interest to talk to about what's going on in their lives.

Actually CPT Jack Durish as far as I know each military service chaplain is chartered to treat each service member with respect in counseling and providing advice as well as performing religious death ceremonies or absence of a ceremony based on areligious faith as in agnostics or atheists.
1. I don't think it makes any sense to have a chaplain with a complete absence of faith. Those with faith in any religion may well be able to provide solace to those of other faiths as well as those with no faith.
2. It would be very difficulty to establish qualifications for an atheist chaplain in terms of adhering to the tenants of the complete black of faith.
3. I think it may make sense to have Chaplain Assistant [MOS 56M in the Army] who is an atheist. Those people could well be able to counsel and advice agnostic and atheists within the supported command.

I can't disagree with anything you say but (and you just knew a "but" was coming, didn't you?)... If atheists decide to test the legal waters (and we know how much they love doing that) then atheist chaplains will be forced upon us to preclude losing all extant chaplains. We can't have the government favoring one class of people over another.
