Thanks TSgt Joe C. for letting us know that on February 18, 1817 future Confederate General Lewis Armistead was born in New Bern, North Carolina. Armistead is best known for leading Pickett’s Charge at the 1863 Battle of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, where he was mortally wounded.
Yes Lewis Armistead entered USMA, West Point in 1834 as a part of the class of 1838.
The Class of 1838 included future CSA generals: GEN P.G.T. Beauregard, BG Henry Constantine Wayne, LTG William Joseph Hardee, BG Alexander Welch Reynolds and BG Henry Hopkins Sibley. The class of 1838 was small so I am certain he got to know those men as cadet before he was expelled because of low academic grades.
