Thanks TSgt Joe C. for letting us know that on February 16, 1984 Bill Johnson became the first USA citizen man to win an Olympic gold medal in downhill skiing at the Winter Olympics in Sarajevo, Yugoslavia a sport long dominated by European athletes. Johnson quickly became a national hero, though his fame was short-lived, and he never again competed in the Olympics.
"American Bill Johnson won an Olympic Gold medal in Downhill discipline in Sarajevo 1984, beating Swiss star Peter Müller and Austrian Anton Steiner"

I passed through Sarajevo on a slow train from Munich to Athens, Greece in December 1981. The city was gray which was typical for communist nations in those days. I contracted it with the colorful Austrian countryside.

Great sports share, too bad fame, and ego caused his tragic down fall.
