I work my ass off and a majority of what me and my family eat are non-perishables because that's all we can afford. There's no reason that's not good enough for anyone on "assistance".

How would you feel about someone sitting in an office somewhere deciding exactly which non-perishables you are allowed to eat, and how much? You may feel like you are not in a position to eat everything you might want.....but at least you have the ability to make choices in the food groups that you can afford. Same goes for those on food stamps.....they should have some level of choice of what food they eat that falls within the budget allowed them for food.......do you not agree? Having the choice, a person may buy a box of cheerios......under this plan, they may be given a box of Rice Chex instead. So what? Maybe they are allergic to the rice in Rice Chex and can't eat it. Have you helped feed that person? The box of cereal will go uneaten, and the person will still be hungry......so what have you accomplished?

We send backpacks of non perishables home with kids because a parent let someone else use the money on the debit card, took cash and bought cigarettes. The kids are thrilled to have the food. Orherwise they would go hungry.

PO1 William "Chip" Nagel So, basically SNAP is a re-branding of food stamps. In my state, these benefits can be used for fast food, for snacks at convenience stores and they have cash back benefits when they use it. I do not care how you re-brand it to make it seem less of a public give away program, if they don't do SOMETHING to clean it up and make it solely for staple foods and no cash advance or wasteful spending, it will continue to be on my list of give away programs that I would like to see eliminated. I am all about helping those who are down on their luck, but these should be safety net programs, not luxury hammocks that recipients comfy up in for life.

Frankly - this is a stupid idea - does not account for children and adults with allergies and/or digestive system incompatibilities with milk products, peanuts, and similar products. Nothing like sending highly vulnerable people in need "food" they cannot eat without getting sick. Also, what a great way to pay off food and agriculture companies that contribute to Republican / President Trump campaign coffers. Canned meats tend to be very high in salt content - very strong contributor to high blood pressure and cardiac death in many patients patients. Sugar in canned fruits and vegetables contribute to diabetes, related diseases, and cardiac death in many other patients. This seems like a horrible way to kill poor citizens in need of government food aid - substantially reducing federal food aid budget over time - at the same time funneling more patients in need into overstressed state and local government hospitals. Anyone even consider Kosher, religious, and cultural limitations on specific foods? Warmest Regards, Sandy :)

When I was growing up in rural Oklahoma in the good old days when times were bad, we got “commodities”. Non-perishable food. It was run by the USDA. I would propose that it be MRE’s. If it is good enough for the Warriors who defend our nation, it is good enough for the sick, lame and lazy

SCPO Morris Ramsey - Yep - when government bought surplus farm products - to stabilize farm prices - they provided these products to those in need. I remember the program well. Warmest Regards, Sandy :)

Remember getting a lot of cheese and milk in school from those surplus programs.
