Thanks Maj Marty Hogan for letting us know that January 31 is the anniversary of the birth of American novelist, journalist, essayist, playwright, film-maker, actor, and political activist Norman Kingsley Mailer whose novel The Naked and the Dead was published in 1948 and brought him renown.
"In 1955, Mailer and three others founded The Village Voice, an arts- and politics-oriented weekly newspaper distributed in Greenwich Village."
I read the left-leaning avant-garde Village Voice while I was cadet at USMA a few times for cultural awareness. :-)
Rest in peace Norman Mailer.
Rematch: William Buckley vs Norman Mailer - After nearly two decades, the intellectual wizards of the Right and the Left duel once again.
