Thanks for sharing SGT John " Mac " McConnell for sharing a summary of the background and a video on the history of Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.
In 1986, I was sent TDY for training to Fort Leavenworth, Kansas to attend the Combined Arms and Services Staff School [CAS3].
While I was TDY, I attended the Kansas City Blues festival at the National Guard Armory.
Fort Leavenworth was home to a small heard of Bison and I expect it still is.
The United States Disciplinary Barracks at Fort Leavenworth (USDB) was originally known as the United States Military Prison, the USDB was established by Act of Congress in 1874. From 1895 until 1903, prisoners from the USDB were used to construct the nearby United States Penitentiary, Leavenworth until around 400 federal prisoners were moved there to complete the work.
My oldest adopted son was sent to the USDB based on a General Court Martial at Fort Benning in 2011. He was later moved to a medium-security federal-prison in WV and this year he was moved to a low-security federal-prison in Mississippi which is his birth state. He has completed 4 associate degrees while incarcerated through VA educational funding. The process worked well at Fort Leavenworth, did not work in WV and is working now that he is incarcerated in Mississippi.
