Just a couple of observations -

This Marine had his conviction overturned on an important technicality. Nonetheless, as the photo and video attest, he and the others did what they did. Bad form. We are supposed to be better than that ... and certainly not advertise it when we aren't.

Bergdahl avoided prison time, in all likelihood on the same technicality though we'll never know for sure. There is a good chance Bergdahl's DD will be overturned on the same technicality. It is never good when someone in the chain of command sticks his oar in the water when he isn't supposed to be rowing.

I don't feel good about either Bergdahl ... or this Marine, Chamblin ... having their sentences either mitigated or overturned because someone in the chain of command ran off at the mouth or did something else he shouldn't have done.

These Marines showed incredibly bad judgement, regardless of how understanding one might be of their feelings at the time, in what they did ... and in posting a record of it on line.

Bergdahl avoided prison time because the US has traditionally been lenient on detainees and POWs. Compared to some former POWs from the Korean War who committed acts of outright treason and were later granted amnesty, Berghdal's actions are actually pretty mild.

SFC (Join to see) - You may well be right but we will never know. What we do know is that Judge Nance stated after the defense raised the issue of Trump's comments that while he personally wasn't influenced by them he had to also consider public perception. Bergdahl's defense has also indicated it will use Trump's post-sentencing comments in the automatic appeal of the DD. At worst, Trump had a positive (from Bergdahl's point of view) impact on the sentence and may well have provided sufficient ammunition to get the DD overturned on appeal. At best, he muddied the waters ... not once, not twice, but three times.

A counseling not to video such acts in the future.

Honestly, Sir, that’s all those Marines would’ve gotten from me.... no 15-6. No courts martial. No hoopla. Simply, “Hey you jackasses! Don’t video that shit! You’re gonna get us all pinched!”

Worthy of prison? No. Worthy of field grade art 15 with two grades reduction in rank, extra duty and restriction and fines? Absolutely.
