Thanks SGT John " Mac " McConnell for honoring U.S. Navy WWII veteran Calvin L. Graham who was awarded the Bronze Star as well as a Purple Heart for bravery at age 12 on the USS South Dakota destroyer [generally ships named after states were battleships].
Unfortunately his mother reported his real age and the Navy stripped him of his medals and threw him in the brig. It is sad that a mother of a 12 year old boy would not have reported him missing when he left home.
Kudos to President Jimmy Carter, who was a navy veteran himself, who approved an honorable discharge for Calvin Graham and "all his medals except the Purple Heart were reinstated. He was also awarded $337 in back pay but was denied health benefits except for disability status for one of his two teeth he lost during WWII."
I am thankful that, one of my heroes, President Ronald Reagan "signed legislation that granted Graham full disability benefits, increased his back pay to $4917 and allowed him $18,000 for past medical bills incurred due to injuries sustained while a member of the military. However, this was contingent on receipts for the medical services. Unfortunately, some of the doctors who treated him had already died and many medical bills were lost, so he only received $2,100 to cover his former medical expenses."
