Well the Federal Victory on the battlefield was followed by reconstruction which was bitterly fought out in Congress between those who wanted to destroy the southern way of life and capability to self sustain themselves versus those who wanted to rebuild the union and offer an olive branch.SPC Erich Guenther
It took a long time for the wounds to heal within divided families, towns, counties, and states. Over time military reunions were held and eventually both sides participated.
At major battlefields such as Gettysburg, monuments were erected by both North and South commemorating the three-day battle and recording the names of those whos served and died there.
I strongly support maintaining and preserving the Civil War Battlefields and the monuments to those who fought and died there.

I wish I had the superpower that so many people claim to have now that enables them to read people's minds and KNOW what a flag or symbol means to other people.

I think we need these monuments to remind us of a past we should never repeat.

I am OK with some of the monuments but I see the other side as well. Groups that are still erecting Confederate Monuments today are largely motivated by racism and white supremicists. A number of Monuments were erected during the "lost cause" era purely to foment racial hate and bigotry and those should be removed as well. I also believe there are valid Civil War Confederate memorials that should not be touched as they are trully historical.

SPC Erich Guenther if we truly believe in the bill of rights, speech- all speech both ugly and beautiful should be protected. If we say only some speech is permissible then who gets to decide what is permissible? I detest what the white supremacists promote but maybe others detest what we promote. Having those monuments gives us something to point to and declare in absolute terms that while supremacy is evil.

SFC Melvin Brandenburg - Well I think the parable of not all speech is free applies. You cannot incite a riot, some would argue that is free speech but falls under the analogy of yelling FIRE in a crowded theater. Likewise hateful speech has been made illegal because it generally can be used to also incite a mob or cause normal people to do abhorrent things.

SPC Erich Guenther actually in Ohio v. Brandenburg (no not me) the Supreme Court ruled hateful speech is protected speech and reversed an earlier conviction.
