Thanks SP5 Mark Kuzinski for reminding us Richard M. Nixon and Spiro T. Agnew were chosen as the presidential and vice-presidential nominees for the upcoming election at Republican National Convention in Miami on August 8, 1968.
Governor and later VPOTUS Spiro T. Agnew had an amazing gift for words and he could send barbed messages including my favorite "nattering nabobs of negativism."
"In the United States today, we have more than our share of the nattering nabobs of negativism."
"An intellectual is a man who doesn't know how to park a bike."
"I apologize for lying to you. I promise I won't deceive you except in matters of this sort."

I remember watching as Agnew placed Nixon's name in nomination. I turned to my wife and said, "Oh my God, Agnew is going to be his running mate." There didn't appear to be any other reason for him to be at the podium at that moment. Agnew was a relatively unknown who had shot up from county executive for Baltimore County to governor of Maryland seemingly overnight. I had watched with interest because he had been president of my high school PTA and my professor of torts in law school. His story is the classic case of a fundamentally decent person corrupted by politics.
