On Sunday, U.S. officials reported that a Navy SEAL was killed and four others were wounded during a U.S.-led counterterrorism operation against Al Qaeda in Yemen. The U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) reported that while targeting the terror group in the Arabian Peninsula, the elite counterterrorism unit SEAL Team Six was able to kill 14 Al Qaeda operatives in what was the first mission approved and carried out under President Donald Trump. The hour-long surprise attack was conducted at the home of a top Al Qaeda leader with the focus of retrieving computer materials that could contain information about future terror plots.

It is interesting that a raid was conducted on the targeted facility instead of a series of drone strikes SFC Joe S. Davis Jr., MSM, DSL. I expect that based on the released details (1) that the targets hid among women and children and (2) they were important enough to be captured alive necessitated special operators assaulting the compound.
The fact that (1) 14 militants from al-Qaida's branch in Yemen, formally known as "al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula," were killed in the operation and (2) tribal officials said the Americans captured and departed with at least two unidentified individuals on Sunday indicates that the mission was an operational success at a significant cost of US Navy SEAL Chief Petty Officer William "Ryan" Owens who was killed and four service members were wounded.
Prayers for the family of Chief Petty Officer William "Ryan" Owens and full recovery of the wounded service members.

WASHINGTON, Jan. 30, 2017 — A Navy special warfare operator who was killed during a Jan. 28 raid in Yemen targeting al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula terrorists gave his full measure for the nation, Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said today.
Shortly after Pentagon officials announced that Chief Petty Officer William "Ryan" Owens, 36, of Peoria, Illinois, had been killed in the raid, Mattis issued a statement expressing his condolences.
Upholding the Noblest Standard
“Ryan gave his full measure for our nation, and in performing his duty, he upheld the noblest standard of military service,” the secretary said. “The United States would not long exist were it not for the selfless commitment of such warriors.
“I thank our gallant troops and their families for their dedication to protecting this nation,” he continued, “and I pass our respects to Ryan's family in this most difficult time.”
U.S. Central Command officials estimated that 14 al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula terrorists were killed in the raid.
Owens was assigned to a special warfare unit based on the U.S. East Coast, Pentagon officials said.
