I think there needs to be a standard that is highly enforced, but we should not be so stingy as to never award those with medals of a high stature. Not awarding someone the Medal of Honor for an act of valor deserving of the Medal of Honor is almost criminal. Looking through citations, it's hard to determine what is and is not Medal of Honor worthy. I mean, a couple hundred years ago, an Officer was awarded the Medal of Honor for surviving a fall off of his horse. A Sailor was awarded the Medal of Honor for jumping ship to save his shipmate. Today, you may not even get a medal for such actions - instead you'd be more likely to receive a safety counseling.. What I am getting at is, there needs to more specific guidelines in place, and every case should be reviewed carefully when awarding certain medals. There doesn't really seem to be much consistency when it comes to this type of thing.. It also takes FAR too long. Waiting YEARS or decades for an award is unacceptable.
