As a trained and experienced infantry mortar officer this account makes me both furious and sad to learn that a field grade officer was watching the action on the ground and ignored the request for artillery fire called in by the overwhelmed mortar platoon remnant.
SFC Joe S. Davis Jr., MSM, DSL it is unconscionable that in that environment, LTC Beard would not leave a squad of infantrymen with an M-60 machine gun to provide fire for the mortar platoon.
I felt like cursing Beard and Roll; but, God reminded me that HE is the righteous judge and he extends judgment and mercy on who He wills.

i got my start in mortars... quickly learned it was safer with the grunts... became an FO and moved up from there.

this makes me sad... and a little furious.

question... what was the fate of the officers that made the stoopid decision to leave those gun-bunnies exposed like that?

This battle and others both larger and smaller were fought for more than ten years in Vietnam and show how American service men,did their duty and upheld their Oath,Welcome Home Brothers.
