SFC Joe S. Davis Jr., MSM, DSL Long range, cross border recon into Cambodia and Laos was extremely valuable re: N Vietnam's troop and supply movement along the Ho Chi Minh Trail which was not always in Vietnam.

"SOG" by MAJ Gary Plaster thoroughly describes long range patrolling's virtues, abilities and hazards!

After Saigon J/G - 2 types dismissed reports of elephants being used as 'transports' on the trail, a blivet of fresh elephant dung soon arrived on his desk!

SGM Roy Benevides, (deceased Nov 29, 1998), was awarded his CMH for his actions in Long Range Recon action

The missions we did were along another trail near the Cambodia border, it was called the "Jolly Trail" named after a 1st Cav chopper pilot that found it. The small team missions had more success than anything else and saved countless lives, by giving advance warning about attacks on Firebases and other intel. The problem we had was that some of the higher ups did not act on our intel gathering. Some did not trust a unit that had an E-5 as the highest ranking member. We had four teams in early 70 and were always undermanned, usually with three teams out and one at base camp controlling como. It was not for the faint of heart to sit on a trail and let 60 - 70 NVA walk by within arm distance.

We have become a military content with modernizing ourselves into little technologically dependent desktop warriors. What happens when another country hits us and knocks out our comms, will we have the training and knowledge to provide commanders with the vision of the battle space, I think not. Let's get back to patrolling, map reading, humping with a pack, field exercises, and ranges. Not that the video game ranges aren't fun but troops need realistic training with the sights, sounds, smells, and physical stressors.

Its bean counters trying to justify their argument; that is, people who don't do things like reconnaissance for a living (or at all). Everyone wants a bonus for coming up with a great idea.
