Unprecedented? The Democrats not only invented the "principle" of blocking SCOTUS nominations during the year of a presidential election, they invented "Borking" - lying to defame a highly qualified candidate which not only prevents that person's rise to SCOTUS, but also marks them for life with a libel.

You pretty much nailed my answer. There is no reason to repeat it. Great insight Capt.

But was there a conformation hearing anyway? Yes. Even though Bork lost his shirt, the Congress at the time STILL fulfilled their constitutional duties and held hearings. I guess since that happened during the Reagan administration, it might have slipped your mind.

SSG Michael Hartsfield - Judge Bork didn't "lose his shirt" in the confirmation hearings. He lost it in the public slander. BTW, tabling a matter is a well-established parliamentarian/legislative procedure for avoiding an issue. There is nothing illegal/immoral about it.

Why is this so newsworthy? You honestly think this would be any different if the parties were reversed?

Please, after what happened to Robert Bork and Justice Thomas, don't make out like the progressive party in the minority are pious and well-intentioned.

If Reid and Pelosi could have gotten a new justice on the court, they'd have pulled every stunt available to make it happen.

Bork had his hearing. This would be the same IF THE SENATE HELD HEARINGS AND VOTED NO. The senate refused to hearings, so this is not at all the same.

LTC (Join to see) - Right. He did and the adjective "Borked" came into being. Thanks to that Lyin' of the Senate, Ted "Chappaquidick" Kennedy.

Fortunately for the US, and unfortunately for progressives is the fact that the senators, who fought the former president's every move so vigorously, have had their words come back to haunt them.

RINO'S like thevery one quoted in this story is one of the reasons the Republican party is being told go to hell.

LTC Trent Klug - Point is, no democratic senate ever refused to hold confirmation hearings.

As for obstruction, last time I checked, Bush did not have a senate that blocked everything he did. He got his authorization to invade Iraq and then when it went bad, he got his authorization for the surge. Yes, the Democrats in the senate filibustered poison pill legislation just as Republicans did to President Clinton, but the level of obstruction by the GOP during the Obama administration is unprecedented. Bush never had Democratic leaders meet on Day one of his administration and vow to block and oppose everything to make him a one-term president, as the GOP famously did to Obama.

Justice Alito, an extreme right-conservative, not only got confirmation hearings, but was confirmed.

Sorry, but the GOP has acted like a bunch of spoiled, unruly children for the last seven years, and they are responsible for a disgusting candidate like Trump winning their nomination.

See, I just love when folks say "oh, but no one was never given a hearing." Did Charles Pickering get one? Did the democrats do everything they could, including a filibuster, to try to prevent Miguel Estrada from getting a hearing?
