Navy Commander Alan Bartlett Shepard Jr. had been training in parallel with Yuri Alekseyevich Gagarin in the competing space programs.
Moreover, Gagarin had orbited Earth, a feat that eluded the U.S. space program until February 1962, when astronaut John Glenn made three orbits in Friendship 7.
Both Alan Bartlett Shepard Jr. and Yuri Gagarin made history and were honored by their respective nations. Unfortunately Yuri Gagarin was mysterious death in 1968 was the result of a plane crash,
