SFC Wade W. When I was in the Navy my ship was home ported out of Norfolk. I was a member of the NRA at the time (will be again soon, but that is not important to the story), and while on a trip to DC decided to stop at the NRA national Firearms Museum. It is a magnificent place. Hope to get back there someday.

I read somewhere that the reason we did away with lever action as opposed to bolt action was simply because it is easier to manage while prone. Not sure how accurate that information was.
Never fired a lever action rifle before, but it looks fun.

SrA Edward Vong I don't know if that is officially the reason, but it would make sense since you would have considerably more issues cycling a lever action from the prone position versus a bolt action.
First gun I ever fired was a Winchester Lever Action Rifle. Don't remember the caliber as I was real young. I just remember that it was summer, it was a cool day, and my Grandpa was teaching me to shoot. Love Lever Action rifles.

PO3 Steven Sherrill - This is entirely speculation but I think a lever action would be better than bolt if you were mounted on a horse.

From a maintenance and repair point of view the bolt-action gun is also easier to work on as opposed to a lever action due to fewer moving parts (well, depending on the bolt action).

I have read in different publications that politicians in the Civil War years opposed the spencer lever action rifles because they feared the common soldiers would waste ammo because of the higher cyclic rate, also have read British infantry had the highest firing rate using the LeeEnfield rifle due to their very strict methods of training with this bolt action weapon
