Army strength cut by nearly 5,000 in December

The ravenous drawdown took a major chunk out of the size of the Army in December, with endstrength dropping by nearly 5,000 active component soldiers.
The Army entered 2016 on Jan. 1 with 482,264 soldiers on active duty, which moves the force to within 7,264 soldiers of the endstrength goal of 475,000 troopers for the fiscal year that ends Sept. 30.
Statistics compiled by the Defense Manpower Data Center show that officer personnel strength was cut by 345 officers in December, 33 West Point cadets and 4,492 enlisted soldiers.
While some of those cuts were generated by involuntary separation actions initiated in fiscal 2015, most of the reduction was achieved through natural attrition, according to personnel sources.
Statistics also show that 69,302 women were serving on active duty Jan. 1, a reduction of 707 from the previous month. Women now comprise 14.3 percent of the Regular Army.
The reserve components consisting of 348,698 National Guard soldiers, and 199,367 Army Reserve members account for more than one-half of the Total Force.

It is interesting that USMA cadets number are included in the reductions. I expect the USNA at Annapolis and the USAFA near Colorado Springs will also experience cuts of 33 midshipmen an d33 USAFA cadets. If this were well thought out the support slice at each of the academies for these 33 would be included in the officer and enlisted ranks. I doubt that this action was well thought through.

LTC Stephen F. it is a crying shame, but with sequestration looming throughout the Armed Forces, it does not surprise me. I just hate to see them cut great quality human resource requirements. What ashamed!

SFC Joe S. Davis Jr., MSM, DSL - One irony is that this news comes out on the heels of the Army commissioned report we discussed over the weekend. That report had recommended to increase the force strength so that we don't do what we did throughout last century - draw down critical specialties and go into the next war short staffed.

Two words that no one wants to hear will be coming to a email near you....STOP and LOSS. Unfortunately something will happen that will require more troops than are on the books now, and you'll hear this play out. You'll even have it where voluntary retiree call ups are allowed. Problem is, once the need is over, we're all back to square one like now. Have to push em out quick, hard, and fast. If you listen to the rhetoric the republican hawks like to use, it could happen a year from now being they want to throw us at everything under the sun. On the flip side, the dems aren't saying it, and that's actually scarier. But should they need Soul Patrol 07 to come back in...I'm ready. I got my PT belt, my knee pads and my tornado buffer. I am ready to unleash a metric assload of Johnsons paste wax in the floor!!!! Let ISIS walk on MY floor if they want to!! Let's GET IT ON!!!
