Kind of a change in subject, but my father served in an Infantry Division in North Africa and Italy during WWII. He spoke of their fear of the German Stuka (Junkers Ju 87) dive-bomber. The screaming siren scared the hell out of everyone.
The Germans were pretty good at building things to kill with.

My father was Navy so didn't mess with them much. I was actually the first in my family, going back decades in Denmark, to not be in the Navy. I've always been amazed at how relatively small the ME-109 is.

Dad didn't make it to Europe until the Berlin Airlift. He spent the War in the CBI on C47s and later the C54 Skymaster.
