Many of us have one thing that really gets to us. I have to say that probably my biggest pet peeve (as it pertains to the military) are ill fitted ACU tops. I constantly find myself explaining to people how their uniform should fit.

I've been out for over 10 years so many things have changed since my time in, but what bothered me at the time was females who wore "club" type make-up in uniform or long brightly painted nails and for guys it was their gig lines.

In Panama we had some of the same issues and In a combat situation A female wearing that on her nails may give a sniper a great target! Mildew or BBQ is what I say......

Yeah, I have mine configured wearer's right to left : parachutist badge, driver's badge, marksmanship badge. All are 1/8 in from the top pocket seam and evenly spaced across the pocket flap with the driver's badge centered. If that is incorrect, then please tell me because that is how I interpreted the regulation.

SFC Gilley, My biggest pet peeve is when Soldiers fail to show respect to Army property and equipment. For example, slamming doors, throwing down gear instead of gently laying it down on a surface annoys me to no end.

SSG (ret) William Martin, great response. I agree with and share the sentiment especially since I am a Quartermaster. What I do is talk to the Soldiers regarding the gear and explaining to them how damaging property hurts the unit but also each Soldier. I also ask them if they would like me to do a Statement of Charges or a FLIPL on them in order to pay for the damages should they occur. One final thing is explaining to them that even if the Army (or other services) end up paying for the damaged items then it is less money that can go towards paychecks or better facilities. Most of the time I'm able to get the point across.

Sloppy appearance. This includes everything from head to toe - haircut, clean uniform, clean boots. Have pride in your uniform and what you represent as a service member.

Exactly. I always came to work in a clean, pressed uniform with highly shined boots. I miss the Woodland camo. I still have my boots and I keep them well cared for even if I don't wear them anymore.

The fact the Navy has BDUs or camouflage uniforms (whatever they're called). A majority of sailors are aboard ship, why do you need to be camouflaged on a ship (especially a gray and black ship)? The rest are on shore duty with BLUE camouflage...??!! I thankfully retired just before they were issued. Plus, I was told, the first issue could melt and stick to your skin while fighting a fire!

SGT Rick Nyberg I honestly think that it had more to do with recruiting than anything. The Marine Corps and the Army had switched over to their digital patterned cami's in the early to mid-2000s, and I believe that the Navy wanted to have a working uniform that gave the appearance of a modern military force. Hence, digital.

SGT Rick Nyberg Well, the biggest problem shipboard is one that PO1 John Y. mentioned already: due to the polyester content of the fabric, the current NWU material has a tendency to melt in firefighting situations, so coveralls are still the underway uniform.

I miss it too. I was a hole snipe in the pit 6 and 6 and LPO of A Gang, so I had the best of both worlds. 6 and 6 in the main space while running all the different parts of A-Gang on an AOE sort of sucked, especially when we were with Romeo at the dip, but underway was great!

Unfortunately, I am guilty of this one. I am between sizes. The large is too tight, and the XL is too loose. The regular size sleeves are too short, and the long size sleeves are too long. What is an oddly shaped guy to do outside of having each uniform custom tailored?

SFC Carden, I would rather you have the sleeves that are too long as you can tighten the velcro around the wrist to make it stay where it should. My biggest thing is when I can see the back pockets. Many people just don't know where the uniform top is supposed to fall, which is between the cargo and hip pockets. It is supposed to be a loose fitting uniform, which is a whole different topic in itself.

I also get quite peeved about haircuts. As someone with longer hair, I frequently have other NCOs tell me that I need to get a high and tight, or that my hair can only be 2 inches long, etc. As long as a Soldier's hair is off the ears and neck, is neatly tapered, looks professional, and does not interfere with the proper wear of headgear, it meets AR670-1. Furthermore - as a junior NCO - you ARE obligated to make on the spot corrections, regardless of who is making them. I'd rather be corrected by a subordinate for making a uniform mistake (though it would be a bit embarassing) then allowed to walk around all day wearing something incorrectly. It's the standard for everyone.

It has to be females with a big tall hair do. Their PC is 6 inches above the head.

My pet peeve would be that when you can see the green socks above the boot. I understand that Soldiers don't like to tuck the pant leg in the boot, then just blouse them below the top of the boot but no lower then the third eyelet
