SSG Carlos Madden, it's good to see a post about rewarding a Soldier for something that they've earned rather than another negative post.
I'm assuming that you're submitting an award or requesting information for another Soldier, which are both signs that you're a leader! Keep that up, brother.
I've never submitted a packet for the Soldiers Medal, but I would assume that any situation where one could have earned this award would have some type of police report, etc. I would try to provide a copy of that for the submission. I'm sure that the Information from that 3rd party would only help for the awards approval.

Absolutely. The police report and any statements are must-have's. I know one person who put in for the award that got approved but I'm also wondering if anyone on RP has any experience with submitting a SM.

Also You need to really word smith the crap outta this to make it sure it makes it thru all the layers. I believe its a two or three star level that give final approval of the award.

SSG Madden I finally found my award files. Each Commannnd can have some details. My last one had these. under 20. Achievements: LOM or Higher-Type SEE ATTACHED NARRATIVE- see Enclosures tab, narrative page, type in 12 pitch, Times New Roman Font, and double space IAW AR 25-50, para 1-20. the other three achievements SEE ATTACHED NARRATIVE then under Proposed Citation SEE ATTACHED PROPOSED CITATION-see Enclosures tab, proposed citation page, (LOM or higher), DOUBLE SPACE and No more than 9 lines for LOM or 19 lines for DSM
Now for a Soldiers Medal I suggest you stay between the 9-19 lines.
I only found one prposed citation example for a Soldiers Medal that read to the effect of the following:
(Service Member) distinguished himself with heroism when he interceded with a mentally disturbed man who had physically assaulted several employees and was threatening many others. He stated he was going to get a firearm and kill everyone in the restaurant. (Servicemember) intervened even though he was unsure if the man had a weapon. He wrestled the man to the ground searched him for weapons while he had others call 911. He was then able to secure a police officers handcuffs thus preventing the said individual from harming anyone else. (Servicemembers) heroism and selfless service to others were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflects great credit on himself, the unit, and the United States Army.
The entire Proposed citation should probably be all Caps. This example never went forward. i provided it only for consideration. Good luck and hope this helps!
Thanks for your Service and trying to help you friend get an award written up for a deserving service member!

Thank you SGM. Thats the textbook answer for sure but we're trying to find someone who's actaully done it. This one isn't as simple as filling out a DA 638 and I'm looking for some specific guidance on the process.

I believe you need to do it similar to an LOM or BSM where you use the 638 and under supporting bullets 1-4 under 1 you indicate see attached. Then you need to have a narrative one or more page supporting document. I had a small exposure to one Soldiers Medal recommendation but it was filed in a CSM's trash can a story you don't need here. Hope that helps! your Field Grade Officers and S-1 Awards folks should have your particular units Award SOP examples etc. Good Luck! I
