May be as rare as the illusive 'NCOER Counseling".

Maybe it's beyond my sphere of influence but I have really only seen a "group counseling" so to speak. Basically the CSM bringing the none selectees and telling them to "read the AAR comments and better luck next time". I also believe that we leaders just forget as some of the none selectees are disgruntled because of this and that, and do not want to hear someone tell them to read the AAR comments. Not the right answer but it happens more often than we think. Just my 2 cents

SFC Earnest Ward, Interaction on your part is needed. Be gentle, be curious, be solicitous, when you have done the best job of politicking you can and you feel you have reached the senior person that might; assist/inform/guide you and there is no one else to ask; it is Q & A time. A reasonable question could be, WTF, over!

I was never "counseled" regarding not making the SFC List. I can say that after each board that I wasn't selected, one of the senior NCOs in my unit would pull me in and go over the AAR Comments and re-look my records to see if something was missed or maybe it just wasn't my time. I've been very fortunate both in the 82nd ABN DIV and in my current unit, to have NCOs senior to me who care and continue to mentor. It's something that I work hard to instill in my junior NCOs at every turn.

I understand what you are saying but you were supposed to be counseled and had your records looked over to see what you need to improve on before the next board starts. Or it could be that I had great leaders that took the time to just do it because they cared.

Maybe today. When I was up for E7 I was informed by the First Sergeant to get an appointment at personnel to go over my records and get an appointment to update my official photo. I actually did make 7 out of the secondary...But never once was I counseled the next 9 years because I didn't make E8.....I did update records and photo every year, but the Signal Corps was constantly changing and they always seemed to fill from the top.
