What do people think about upon a Specialist passing a promotion board them becoming a Corpral? I think this system would be beneficial to soldiers by allowing them to become more familiar with what their responsibilities will be when they make points and are promoted to Sergeant.

Generally, I will do a Lateral Appointment to Corporal when I need a Team Leader and I have a SPC that seems capable. Promotable status has nothing to do with that decision. It is all about tactical and technical proficiency.

Agree! I have seen combat soldiers easily progress through the ranks fast and reach SSG and totally lack any leadership skills! It does “Catch up” with when submitting their E7 Packet. I have also seen Outstanding SSG’s not be selected for E7 because their packets were so screwed up it never made through the first step in the selection process! I strongly recommend any SSG submitting an E7 packet to make absolutely sure it is done right! Do not depend or assume your 201 file actually contains everything you need. Also MAKE SURE your photo and 201 file match perfectly! If they don’t, your file goes into a pile and isn’t even reviewed ANY further! I encourage ALL Soldiers make a copy of everything that should be in your 201 file is actually in your file! Things tend to Magically Disappear. If You fo Not have a copy of what Should be in your file, then you ARE screener! I worked the E7 Selection Board while waiting for a slot to open for my MOS. I also completed Promotion Point Worksheets and Recomps. Please do NOT assume your records contain ALL your information. I always made copies for My Soldiers and when they PCS’d and were on the Promotion List, I made Sure their records were marked “Promotion Standing List” included. I also made the Soldier a copy of their packet and a copy of the Promotion Standing List! List. Without the List from last Unit, cannot be placed on List at Gaining Unit!!!SSG (Join to see)

What do you do if you DO Not have Supervisors who are invested in such preparation?SFC (Join to see)

I don't think a board is necessary for the coropral rank, because in order to be promoted to corporal they need to have already demonstrated leadership abilities and most, that I encountered at least, were already promotable to E5. If a board was introduced we would have too many corporals in an already saturated NCO pool. What leadership positions could they hold other than squad leader? I'm thinking of in a combat arms unit of course. I personally don't think the coropral rank should be used outside of a combat unit. Nothing personal just my own opinion.

What if lateral promotion to CPL was contingent upon score obtained by the Promotion Selection Bosrd? That would raise the standard for lateral promotion. If total points awarded is 200, then any Soldier obtaining a score over ? would be laterally promoted to CPL. Any thoughts?

Mike, study prior to appearing before the E4 Selection Board! Make sure you know your general orders! Also, expect the unexpected! I got tripped up on one question: what does CHAMPUS mean? That was the Only question I missed and I knew what it was and explained that, but couldn’t remember exactly what the acronym was. No one helped me prepare for the board! Also make sure your Uniform is Perfect IAW the Regs! The SGM tried to “ding” me for wearing a bracelet, it was my watch! LOLLCpl Mike Moore

One board for E4 to be promotable, high score for lateral promotion to CPL. Would motivate Soldier to attain high score which would be a demonstration of leadership skills. How does that sound?
