I have a friend who wants to join the military. He currently wants to be a Special Forces medic. What information or advice can I give him?

Have him go see an Army recruiter and tell him he wants to become an 18D through the 18X program. That will get him started and to see if he qualifies.

1LT Nick Kidwell - There's actually not a lot of mystery to it. He can start with the Army's page on the 18D MOS: http://www.goarmy.com/careers-and-jobs/browse-career-and-job-categories/combat/special-forces-medical-sergeant.html.
To learn more about the training, he can visit this: http://www.specialforcesassociation.org/inside-the-sfqc/
And this: http://www.sorbrecruiting.com/SF_Training2.htm
I believe it's a 5 year contract in total, and approximately the first two years will be in training. As an 18X contract, I don't think he can get an 18D guarantee, meaning, he can be guaranteed which Special Forces specialty he'll eventually get, but I'm not certain about this. After his 18-24 months of training, he should go to an "A-Team" (AKA ODA) and spend 3 years there starting as an E-5. Of those three years, depending on where he ends up, he'll likely do a few overseas trips (most likely non-combat unless Iraq really heats up), go to a bunch of high speed schools, and learn how to navigate the Army's terrible admin computer network since an 18D is also the team's "Chief Admin Officer"
Note that many 18X fail training somewhere along the way, and if they do, they become infantry.

Have him go to http://www.sorbrecruiting.com/ for a start.. the selection process does a GREAT job of determining your MOS based upon numerous factors.. after that the x-ray program starts their pipeline..

Get a high ASVAB score, go 18X. Nearly all the 18Ds that I met at one particular clinic near Fort Bragg had scores of 99 on the ASVAB.

18X program is the way to go, but it's a very hard road. Not impossible, but very challenging none the less. tell him to get in the best shape of his life, it will come in handy.
