I spoke to a 5th grade class in 2010 about our military in Iraq and Afghanistan. On the way to the school, I realized my audience were all 1 year old or less on 9/11. They would have no context and connection to what was going on in the world because it's the only world they ever knew. It was incredibly challenging.

How do we educate our future Americans about 9/11?
What have your personal experiences been?
What should the lesson be?
What are some good resources?
What message works?

I was a NYC Police Officer that day, I was a first responder, and I also responded to the first bombing years before. My children all lived thru those terrible days, especially not knowing if I was down there when the towers collapsed, I wasn't but I lost 13 friends, cops, firemen and NYS Court officers. Soon after I was activated with my guard unit and stayed active for 18 months, I missed many of their funerals, but I remember them every day.

History & cultural differences in freedoms across the world need to be focused on here. It's helpful to start by explaining the US values & freedoms are not always shared across the world. There will always be people wanting to bring harm to our country and 9/11 is a prime example of this. WWII (Pearl Harbor) has a lot we can learn from here as well.

Excellent reply, Capt. Charters. If I might add to your comment that there will always be people who are wanting to bring harm not only to the US, but to her friends and allies. These people represent the lowest common denominator of human being - angry, hateful and envious of anyone who lives in the light of Freedom. 9/11 not only changed the US, it changed the world.

I believe you need to plant the seeds that there are different religions in this country as well as throughout the rest of the world. Most are peaceful and respectful. There are some groups of individuals, that for their own purpose tend to twist the teachings of there spiritual leader. A simple understanding of the religions of the world be a good starting point. I concur that slow and thoughtful approach to all of the freedoms that we enjoy is a good starting point.

I would guard about telling the truth about being at war with Islam, your teachings will not go far because we cannot tell the truth about who we are at war with for some reason, but most importantly, I teach my grandchildren to shoot and survive and as long as there are followers of Mohammad on the planet, Infidels lives are in jeopardy. There it is, truth, and 9/11 was heinous, but I believe we are headed for something that will make that look like a trial run, stay thirsty my friends.

1SG Jay Vanderford - I do believe that we are the fat target as it were, but also the most protects with armed citizens, therefore it is my belief that they will pervert our constitution and use it against us slowly changing our laws until they run this country. A less violent maneuver, but they couldn't go head to head with us so that's my analysis based on what I know.

A fair guess... I'm basing my "paranoid delusion" on historical precedence. They start by moving into an area. At first they are a very small minority. They preach that they are a religion of peace and love and tolerance. They complain that they are being oppressed and discriminated against, and bullied, so that the local people (according to Mohammed, the stupid Christians and Jews) feel sorry for them, and pander to them. Then, they get to have a larger population. And, they begin doing things like lawsuits, and so on. And, because the "stupid Jews and Christians" feel sorry for them, they win, and they start to push sharia law and their other agendas. Then a few more Muslims, and they begin to commit terrorist/terrorizing acts against the Jews and Christians, or other faith groups. And finally, there are enough Muslims that they can outright put the people they previously claimed to have peace and tolerance and love for, to the sword. Mohammed, their revered prophet, told them to do this! Almost word for word. Read it out of history! Not out of western history, but out of THEIR OWN HISTORY, which makes it all the more damning. And tell me, please tell me, that we are not seeing THE VERY SAME PATTERN showing up today. Look at Europe... FLOODED with "refugees" who are raping, killing, robbing, anyone who is different, demanding Sharia law, having roaming bands of thugs punishing people.

I do believe in tolerance, so I hope not to attract the racist statement here, you are absolutely correct, they are taught this. And if you look at America, from the BLM to the sports stars that willingly and openly disrespect the country that has given them everything you have to wonder what is at work behind the scenes here. A follower of Islam can do anything in the name of their quest, go to church with infidels, consume alcohol..... who's to say they have not taken advantage of a few people with hate to begin the fall from within. Its what the terrorist do, we would have fewer than a hundred terrorist, yet we were fighting with an entire village based on these tactics of exploiting fears and beliefs. America will never be destroyed from the outside.
If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves.
