We've expressed our outrage at the disrespect shown around the world and at home, immortalized the moment it was raised in Iwo Jima, stood at attention as casket after casket arrived at Dover for the next leg of their journey covered with our flag.

MSgt (Join to see) One of the most disappointing things I see when it rains are the flags soaked in the dark. I want to knock on every door or take them down and store them as they dry myself.

Couldn't agree more. Many folks don't even bother learning proper etiquette of flying or displaying the flag.

I used to get the goosebumps/chills during flag raisings, ceremonies, the Anthem. I loved our history. I loved teaching it. But I have been in a 7.5 year funk. I was excited about purchasing a large flag pole in 2012. Needless to say, I didn't get to. The outlook doesn't look better for me and our flag. All things end don't they? There was a Last Day of the Roman Empire too. We will just transition into something else as history rolls on.

SPC Kirk Gilles History does repeat itself. As long as two people breathe they will disagree over something. Wars will be fought for no good reason. But I believe as long as one American who still believes in freedom will preserve our flag under the direst circumstances. Refer to the movie "The Book of Eli" with Denzel Washington.

OK, I'll take the "body shaming" (unsuitable for TV viewing by children) hit for not flying the National Ensign at the house. It just never made the "to do" list. One thing I do all the time is light the smoking lamp on my front porch. It's a long Navy tradition stemming from the high fire hazard aboard wooden ships. Crew could light their pipes from it when authorized. Any personally owned fire starting stuff was dealt with harshly. So to me, I see that as the visible reminder of my shipmates while I relax and reflect over cognac and cigars. It isn't the style of typical smoking lamps but rather a 15" Fresnel Lens anchor light made in Rotterdam. It does the job and then some. And yes, I've lit my cigar with it just to know I can. We all express ourselves in different ways. I've always been more subtle than most. There isn't a Seabee Museum Annex on my living room wall. I didn't have an I love me wall in my office. I only wear a camo cover on Memorial and Veterans Day. Bottom line: God bless those that fly the flag!

CAPT Kevin B. There exists a long tradition involving " the smoking lamp is lit" in the USAF as well.

Maj Kim Patterson that brings back a memory. I was at an AF dining in and there was this smoking lamp. I thought gee, they're doing this for the Navy guy. Never forget the look of disgust I got when thanking them. Then I reminded them of how long it was around before anyone ever went up in a balloon. Good laugh and another round of drinks.

There is a 21 ft flagpole in front of my house. Old Glory flies every day and the American Legion flag flies below it most of the time. But this morning I added 4 stick flags lining the front walk in Honor of Flag Day and the Army Birthday...
