For those of you that have gone through the new curriculum what do you think of it? When I went through the Academy was 3 weeks long with no CBT prior. Do you feel bettet prepared for First Sergeant duty after graduation?

I enjoyed it. You got to all the reading and discussion topics prior to showing up and that prepared me for better understanding and more meaningful dialog. Plus the cadre were very knowledgable and professional. I enjoyed it.

The Army's version sucks. It's all about drill & ceremony and has no relationship to the leadership and other skills required for the job. It's a typical Army response - fixing something that wasn't broken.

1SG Blount,
Thank you for your reply. We do drill and ceremony, but don't spend that much time on it. What kind of training do you all get for dealing with soldiers issues?

SMSgt (Join to see) - That was kind of my point, 1stSgt. The Army's version of 1SG Course emphasizes crap we don't need and gives little attention to things we do (eg counseling)

On the Army side of the house, each installation was responsible for training new 1SG's and CDR's prior to taking responsibility and command over their first unit. I was in-charge of developing and providing the field level maintenance curriculum for each class and from what I could tell that the course was beneficial. In my opinion, no class will truly prepare for the rigors of being a 1SG. I earned some 1SG time as a young SFC prior to going Warrant Officer and I leaned on diamond wearing 1SG's and Sergeant Majors for any additional guidance and direction if I needed it. I do believe that a standardnized 1SG course would be the way to go for all branches of service.

That is crazy that each installation is charged with training First Sergeants. I would love to have a joint school. I am intrigued by Army First Sergeants. I would love to shadow one for a month in their unit and then have them shadow me a month in my unit. I think a lot could be learned by both sides providing their thoughts as each First Sergeant deals with issues in their units. I think AF First Sergeants could be a little tougher and the Army First Sergeants I met could use a little more people skills.

1stSgt Ryan Glosson, That is a very reasoned response. My response would be : Someone has to be in CHARGE!

That is true. The commandants could be alternated between the different services that use the schoolhouse. The curriculum could be a joint endeavor headed by Air University. The only reason I say them is because the Air Force has a decent First Sergeant curriculum. All branches would have to provide instructors and there could be a liaison for each branch. I know it is a pipe dream, but I think it could work. There are other entities out there that utilize multiple branches for personnel and run by one service. I have deployed so many times with the Army that it wouldn't affect me to be under an Army commandant. Plus I think it would be good for some of the Air Force First Sergeants to see how the other half lives and works.

1stSgt Ryan Glosson, My response: "Someone has to be in charge", is in relation to what a good Army 1SG does! BE IN CHARGE!
