Civilians use the term "MIA" regularly, but does it have a negative connotation within the military community?

I completely agree. I use this term a lot without even thinking about it usually when referring to something like a misplaced remote, keys, or screwdriver. I believe the context in which you are using the term would determine how it's perceived or accepted.

It doesn’t have a negative connotation within the military circles I run. MIA isn’t the same as AWOL or UA. Those are used negatively. I would need to better understand the context you are talking about to see where your POV is.
