Apparently commemorative medals and awards were far more common in American military history prior to World War I lacking official service awards by the Armed Forces. As official awards became common place commemorative awards didn't go away.

Commercially sponsored commemorative medals really don’t have a place anymore. Our recognition system is deep enough to fulfill this.
To be clear, we are talking non-DoD/War Department medals offered commercially for purchase with no award criteria. Examples can be found on Medals of America and similar commercial sites.

LTC Jason Mackay - I think those would be interesting and mean more if they had a level of control, for example if they could only be officially awarded by recognized veteran organizations.

SPC (Join to see) between campaign medals, overseas service bars, SSI-FWTS, and combat decorations not sure what role they’d play. Not sure I’d want IAVA, VFW, American Legion et al randomly issuing awards, but if they did, it’s a free country.
