SMA to Leaders: PT with your Soldiers. Do you agree?

It was my understanding that this was a given, implied task if you will and just down right leadership 101. How can you lead form the front if you're not participating in PT with your Soldiers. Judging form the SMA's statement and leading from the front he is correcting some leaders that are not doing this with their troops.

I am confused as to why this is a statement needed to be made,,, Is this not what happens every morning?
I'll admit in the last years of my career, having NO soldiers in my direct supervision I choose to not go to the unit PT formation across post to do organized PT.
BUt I would have done so had the commander asked,,,well ok, one of the commanders, the other, as support was a one way street..all about them and what can the subordinate due to enhance their career, maybe I would have found a more important reason to do PT with my boss....a Senior SM, that lived and breathed competency and care of SMs in his unit.

CSM Michael Lynch Don't get me worng, a man in his position has a clearer view of what is going on Service wide,,and from what I know of the CSM, had it not needed to be said, he would have said something else.... IOW he does not waste words on unneeded things.

Coming from a support company, this is definitely an issue. In our company it was troubling how many people would magically appear on a profile a week before a PT test. Not to mention, when your first priority is to be a Soldier, you can't do that if you are not physically fit.

I agree with you CSM Lynch!! This is essential for readiness and a great opportunity to bond with your team, squad, platoon etc. Always lead by example..

What drives me crazy is when only certain rank conducts PT. Everywhere I go only SGTs and SSG lead PT. So no other NCO rank can lead PT? If it was up to me. Every soldier regardless of rank would lead PT. There nothing in the regulations that states the only a certain rank or lower lead PT. And don't tell me, it's to train soldiers how to lead PT. I once had to do it once a week as a SGT because only SPC and SGT were on the PT schedule to lead and received hardly any guidance, or training advice.
