I am 1LT Nyan Reynolds. I am an active duty officer. I completed my MPH in 2017. I recently applied to a doctorate program in strategic leadership and seeking information for scholarships provided to active duty officers.

My goal is to start school fall 2019. I've completed my application and most likely will get accepted to the school. My GPA in grad school was 3.67. I was told I can use tution assistance? I am not sure.

I used my Post 9/11 benefits to pay for grad school. Any information that could lead to a potential scholarship would be greatful.

Best,
Nyan

Unfortunately, there's no tuition assistance for PhD programs. They are specifically prohibited from TA because the Army has doctorate programs. Most of them are extremely competitive and most of them are AMEDD programs as well. I'm not aware of any in your chosen field.
You can start running down leads with the School for advanced military sciences, and also this document for Advanced civilians schooling.

The only hope might be if he decides to select a new Career Field Designation and goes with FA59 Startegic Plans and Policy or FA47 West Point Instructor (not a guest instructor but a permanent one). There may Be others like the Nuclear guys or maybe even FA50 Force Management or the ORSA guys. You may get some support for a fellowship or a tailored PhD. It will be restrictive as far as field of study and location...and he'll have to,wait until after his CFD board.

1LT Nyan Reynolds does the school participate in the Yellow Ribbon Program? Participating schools have different Packages. You can try a website called FASTweb. It is a grant and scholarship aggregator. They brief it at SFL TAP when you do the education track. You can see about TA. It is capped and may not put a dent in the bill.

There are possible fellowships and advanced civil schooling, look on HRC's website behind the CAC curtain. Rand Arroyo is one of them. Issue is Branch chooses the degree Area. None of them are guaranteed and they are highly competitive. ACS is also capped by 18 months max, which doesn't align with the meandering 7 year journey of a doctorate degree.

Sir-

Evening. I did not ask about the yellow ribbon program but will do so next time I speak with my education's counselor. Honestly, I wasn't aware of this program as a means to pay for school.

Thank you for the advice. I really appreciate it. I will visit the sites you recommended and hopefully find ways to pay for the degree without having to take out additional student loans.

Best,
LT Reynolds

1LT Nyan Reynolds Yellow ribbon program won't apply in your situation, it's not available for active duty soldiers. Also, the purpose of Yellow ribbon is to bridge the gap between what the GI Bill covers and the total cost of the school itself.

SFC (Join to see) - there is some slosh that colleges have to reduce or offset tuition and fees. HRC used to have you go negotiate with say an Ivy League graduate school to work the tuition down to something they could cover with ACS. So there may be play in there. I mention yellow ribbon if the LT can come up with what post 9/11 GI bill would otherwise pay if he had the benefit, the school can meet him half way with what they were prepared to pony up under yellow ribbon. The Yellow Ribbon varies by school as it was not a mandatory program, rather a voluntary program they could decide what they would give.

CSM Hayden,

Thank you. I had a large amount of student loans before joining the military. It is my hope to not repeat that mistake. This is why I reached out to a larger audience, hoping to find sound advice. So far, so good.
